Widespread Damage Across Multiple States

The tornado outbreak generated numerous damage reports from Texas to Missouri, with over 20 tornado sightings recorded. The severe thunderstorms that produced the deadly twister also caused significant damage across America’s Heartland.

Impact on Denton and Cooke Counties

The tornado struck along the Denton-Cooke county lines, devastating areas near Valley View. Cooke County Sheriff Ray Sappington confirmed at a news conference that the twister resulted in at least seven deaths and left dozens injured. The National Weather Service (NWS) preliminarily rated the tornado as an EF-2, indicating considerable damage.

Destruction at Key Locations

Many injuries occurred at an AP Travel Stop and Shell station, where people sought shelter from the tornado. The storm caused extensive damage in northern Denton County, including homes, RVs, and power lines. Significant destruction was also reported at Lake Ray Roberts Marina and among RVs. Tragically, a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old were found among the deceased.

Ongoing Search and Rescue Efforts

Local officials warned that the death toll might rise as search and rescue teams continue their efforts. Early Sunday, approximately 100,000 Texas customers were left without power due to the tornado’s impact.

Assessing the Tornado’s Strength

National Weather Service teams are on the ground assessing the damage to determine the tornadoes’ strength using the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Multiple NWS teams from Fort Worth, San Angelo, and surrounding areas are reviewing the damage in Montague, Cooke, Denton, Collin, Callahan, and Eastland counties.

State Response and Disaster Proclamation

In response to the devastation, Governor Gregg Abbott issued a disaster proclamation for Denton, Cooke, Montague, and Collin counties, enabling state resources to aid in the recovery efforts.
