Internal memo: Amazon’s workplace safety chief will be leaving next month

Amazon  reports that the company’s top executive responsible for workplace safety and health is retiring next month.

Heather MacDougall joined Amazon in 2019, after she was promoted from the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. According to a memo John Felton, Amazon’s head for operations, sent to employees Monday, Oct. 7, MacDougall will be leaving the company.

Felton wrote that Heather had been an integral member of our leadership team for more than three years and has now decided to explore other opportunities. The memo was seen by CNBC. “I would like to thank her for all her contributions and wish her the best on her next steps.”

A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed MacDougall’s departure.

MacDougall was responsible for the safety and health of Amazon’s 1.5 million plus employees around the world. As Covid-19 spread rapidly, causing businesses to close and offices to be temporarily closed, Amazon’s warehouse workers and delivery workers continued to report to work in early 2020.

Employees criticised Amazon’s coronavirus response. They claimed it was not doing enough to protect them on their job. Amazon has been under a lot of scrutiny for its warehouse injury rates. Workers, labor organizations, and lawmakers all complained that the company puts workers at a greater risk of injury than its competitors. The recent organizing wave at Amazon warehouses is a result of workplace safety concerns.

Amazon denies reports that it has been subject to unsafe working conditions. MacDougall was the company’s CEO. The company had ambitious goals to reduce injuries. In 2017, Amazon pledged to be “Earth’s Most Reliable Employer”, adding it to its corporate values list.

MacDougall was previously the head of OSHRC (a federal agency that reviews workplace safety and health disputes between employers, the Labor Department) for two terms prior to her appointment at Amazon. In 2013, the Obama administration appointed her to head the agency.

MacDougall also established ties with prominent safety organizations to improve Amazon’s safety image. Amazon and the National Safety Council formed a partnership in June 2021 to reduce the number of strains and sprains common among warehouse workers.

MacDougall will be replaced by Becky Gansert as vice president for global specialty fulfillment. Gansert will oversee Amazon’s development and learning teams. These teams are responsible for “improving the daily experience” of warehouse workers and delivery workers.

Felton stated that safety and associate experience are closely linked priorities and Becky is uniquely qualified and qualified to help us move forward with them both.
